"Why Teaching Kids Self-Regulation Skills Is Essential"

How parents and teachers can help students develop digital media learning strategies

This article focuses on the importance of regulating learning strategies in the digital media world.  Technological skills are likely to give students a competitive edge in their prospective work spheres, but handing a student a laptop does not guarantee he/she will use it in a creative or beneficial manner.  When so much information is exposed through technological means, how do we regulate our student's proper usage?  Also, the article talks about promoting self-regulation in our students, where they can use technology self-sufficiently in it's most efficient purposes.  The article gives some advantageous tips we can teach our students in analyzing and reflecting on the information they are exposed to.

  1. Mike, I really like your article. I was reading over another article detailing when students were not being responsible with their internet usage, and I feel that the examples given here are great ways to combat that kind of irresponsibility. It is very important to give students the necessary tools to understand how technology and the internet can be used, in both a positive negative way.

    1. Its funny that people of all ages will abuse internet privileges whenever possible. From my college class experiences, whenever I see students with laptops that are generally not focused on class and are instead on Facebook and whatnot. Typically, when someone brings a laptop to class, it is used to be counterproductive instead of being used for class.

  2. Michael,

I think this article perfectly exemplifies why teachers must integrate technology into the classroom. We are guides when it some s to the students' learning of new things. It's like the old saying goes, give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he's fed for life. If we just present our students with the technology then we are not helping them. If we TEACH them how to use the technology in innovative ways we are opening gateways for them that may not have otherwise have been made available. How would you counter the negative uses of technology in the classroom?
